“Watching old movies is like spending an evening with those people next door. They bore us, and we wouldn't go out of our way to see them; we drop in on them because they're so close. If it took some effort to see old movies, we might try to find out which were the good ones, and if people saw only the good ones maybe they would still respect old movies. As it is, people sit and watch movies that audiences walked out on thirty years ago. Like Lot's wife, we are tempted to take another look, attracted not by evil but by something that seems much more shameful -- our own innocence.”
-Pauline Kael

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot. Does that mean that we should forget old acquaintances, or does it mean if we happened to forget them, we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot?"

Well I don't know about auld acquaintances, but my inactivity on this blog makes me wonder if it should be forgotten. I didn't keep the promises I made in regards to this blog and so now I need to re-think on how to proceed. One change I'm considering is to not limit myself to writing about films from just a singular year.  My original concept was to focus on films that were 30 years prior to the current year. Right now I may broaden that scope to included films from the last century. At least it gives me a greater choice of what to write about.

Right now the important thing is consistency. An un-updated blog becomes a neglected and unread blog.  There is still a small part of me that wants to put down my thoughts about the movies I've seen from my past as well as older unseen films that I've always meant to get around seeing.  A new year is supposed to herald the chance towards new beginnings. I'm hoping to give this blog a new start.

May fortune favor the foolish.

"The night was humid. Class dismissed. I have an enormous headache in my eye."

You know if I ever write this blog title again on this site, it will mean that I'm giving up. Hopefully that won't be the case, but family life and my own resistance to writing are proving big obstacles for me to overcome. As well as a horrible typing skill. Maybe it's the keyboard?

"I can sing while I read, I am singing and reading both."

I realized that there is a major element that is missing from my impressions of movies: the music. Music is often a very important part of a film and as I looked back on my previous posts I realized I had omitted this very important part of them.

"Dead? No excuse for laying off work."

Impression: Time Bandits

It’s been about ten years since I last saw Time Bandits in its entirety. What always surprises me about the film is how delightfully strange it continues to feel despite my familiarity with the movie.

"Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within."

Impressions: Chariots of Fire

So after writing about what might be my favorite film from 1981, I now will discuss the picture that was given the Best Picture Oscar honors for that year: “Chariots of Fire”. I can honestly say that while it’s a fine movie, it in no way excels “Raiders of the Lost Ark” or the more acceptable (in Oscar standards) fellow Academy Award nominee “Reds” in terms of presentation or execution.

"This... this is history."

Impression : Raiders of the Lost Ark

I will start this post with the most hyperbolic statement I will ever make on this blog: "Raiders of the Lost Ark " is the greatest action movie ever made.  Personally I don't think it's that bold a belief. If you ask most movie lovers past a certain age, there's no doubt in my mind that many of them would rank "Raiders..." in their top three if not at number one.  So what makes this movie tower over all the action films that have come before it and afterwards? I'm going to do my best to tell you why.
